Update: Check Status is working now

Update: and knew the check status button worked in the software and it shows that the IRS accepted my return and it shows the ID number assigned by the IRS. I hope it works with everyone here. Keep trying and it will eventually go through.

efile "Bad Gateway" error message since yesterday.

They are using AI which is pretty cool as announced on their website. Forget about making efile work on time when it is most needed. What a fiasco from H&R Block! I keep getting the "Bad Gateway" error message since yesterday. They can't do the only job they are supposed to do. What is the root cause of this dismal failure? Cut too many corners? Gone out of business? Cost savings gone wrong. Negligence? Incompetence? Accident? And their lack of communications is even worse because that is under their control. And they put a positive spin on the bad news saying that in-person and other delivery methods are still working. Will the CEO take responsibility for this fiasco and resign or take a hit to his compensation?

Finally it worked for me

Finally the software was able to show filed status and that it is sent to the IRS. But when I press the check status button it times out and status is not checked.

Chat session now leads with statement of issue

I see now they are at least notifying you of an issue when you open a support chat:

"You may encounter an issue when you attempt to e-file. If you're unable to file, don't worry, we've got your back. We'll ensure that you don't incur any penalties or interest - or we'll cover it for you.
Please continue to try until you get a successful e-file submission. We apologize for the inconvenience and we’re doing everything we can to resolve as quickly as possible."

The program will not e-file.
Note says "servers may be down for maintenance at end of tax season". Looks like they thought they weren't up for the task.

After ~20 years of efile, I mailed my docs.

I mailed it in. No chance of pushing further into the day with this company and how they handled this. I couldn’t chance it. Good luck all.

multiple charges even though not filing due to Bad Gateway

Getting bad gateway error - not getting taxes filed since HR BLOCK is the issue,there is obviously some code error on their side, not my computer. But they have over 12 pending charges on my CC due to my attempts to file. THEY SHOULD Stop taking money before providing a service. I have used HR for years since before they were call HR - now will need to look for a more professional, efficient online service

"Got though on chat and after some back and forth they said they are aware of issue and "Thank you for being patient. The issue should be resolved soon. We understand that this the final day to file your tax return and how important it is that you have submitted it . Please allow us to get this issue resolved in a timely manner. Should be resolved around 12 pm cst"

efile not working and getting "Bad gateway" message in Colorado. Their website says nothing. Thousands of users reporting HR Block efile issues on DownDetector website. But they do promote AI on their website which is satisfying to know. Totally unacceptable. What a disgrace!

Once the dust settles, do your part in making issue visible to others, write Amazon review, Google b

HR Block not providing status anywhere on their web site, agent wait time in a call 60+ minutes ending up with No Agents Available message. Main priority should be to ensure filers don't miss filing deadline. With inability to submit returns and no clear message whether return has been submitted, I believe IRS owes to shut HR tax filing service down next year. People who witnessed their behavior so far will sure stay away, but with marketing dollars put in, they may try acquire new customers. Do your part, least we can do - put Amazon review if you purchased from amazon.

Still failing...

I got two to transmit and check the status when I posted about 30 minutes ago (i.e. the program knows these hit the IRS, with several failed attempts while checking status).
But I still have one failing to transmit... although I know it was already accepted by the IRS on one of the earlier "failed" e-filing attempts.

Being opaque is a bad idea

This is my 10th year using H&R Block tax software, up until now without issue. I'm getting the 'Bad Gateway' message. H&R Block is being opaque and not transparent about their server issue. When a company does that it leads me and others to imagine bad things, like they've outsourced their IT to an incapable company, or they've cut costs by not maintaining their servers, or they've laid off the capable members of their staff, etc. Without telling us the real problem and insulting us by implying we're to blame ('make sure your computer is connected. . .' really!?) or insulting us by saying they perform maintenance when the servers would have the largest load (they're not that stupid), I imagine the worst. They should just update their message and say the servers are overloaded, or something. Last year for me.

Some e-filing are reaching the IRS, even with the error message on the program. If you do multiple times, you might get rejected and then accepted e-mails. Verifying on IRS refund status shows they received it.

Filing a free IRS Extension

For those just looking to file an extension and know that they don't owe tax, extensions are free to file on the IRS website. Just search for Form 4868 - Application for Automatic Extension. If you know you owe tax, or think you might, you can simply make a payment with IRS Direct Pay and designate it as an "Extension" payment. This counts as filing a Form 4868 without having to submit the form

Can't send my return

Same as others - Unable to connect. We're having trouble making a connection between your software and our server. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet. If the problem persists, it might be due to your security settings and/or proxy settings. Note that at the end of the tax season, the server might be temporarily down for maintenance. System message: bad gateway.

I submitted two federal and two state returns yesterday with no problem (for myself and deceased dad). They were almost immediately submitted and accepted on the first try. I'm trying to get one more in for my teen son and have gotten the error message above for the last 8 hours. Considering it accepted the earlier submissions, it is not a connection issue on my end.

Can’t send my return

Same situation as Rachel and others. Got emails that it is submitted then accepted by IRS but software still shows not filed and always give the bad gateway error. I owe the IRS so I can’t check my refund to see if it really reached the IRS. Have been using H&R for maybe 15 years and never had such a problem. Time to switch to something else next year.

IRS Website Direct Pay to File Extension

Well folks I think I'm going to punt. I owe a small amount of tax. Submitting a Direct Pay in the amount H&R Block says I owe through the IRS Direct Pay option. According to the IRS this counts for submitting an extension & will cover the tax liability I was claiming anyhow. Check under "Extension" on this IRS web page: https://www.irs.gov/payments/payment-options-available-through-direct-pay

Reached an agent

Someone on the r/hrblock board was able to reach an agent on chat after 2.5 hours and all he said was that there was a server issue. No ETA.

Frustrating is the Word!

Same issue as everyone else - software has trouble connecting, it won't file the return. I have always been a last-minute filer. I used TurboTax for years and never had this issue, and used H&R Block last year and did not have this issue. It seems pretty bad for H&R Block that they can't get their act together when it's needed most.

Frustrating!

Rachel, I got two e-mails from HRBlock, the first at 8:39pm saying my return was submitted, and the second at 9:10pm saying it was accepted. Same situation as you on the software not showing I filed. It's past midnight now, so I'll check again tomorrow. I've used HRBlock software to file my taxes for a number of years now, and filed on the last day the last two years (so I would have been early this year), and never had this problem before.

Not only do they overcharge you for filing and look for ways to nickle and dime you throughout the process but their website consistently fails. I've been finished with my return for over an hour but because of a glitch in displaying the e-file captcha I can't check out no matter what I do. If you are having issues transmitting your return on Windows 11, google enabling TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in Windows. You will need to add two entries in the registry. One in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.0\Client and one in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.1\Client add a DWORD Enabled and a value of one. This will fix the connection issue.

f*** hr block, a bunch of so called tax experts who don’t know shit about shit. I asked three different people from different branches if I was to file online with hrblock software that I would be eligible to get the cash advance they offer. All said it shouldn’t be a problem. Come to find out you do have to file with one of there tax semi pros and pay to get that service. And to add more bs to it you have to get the advance on that bs emerald card, can’t get dd to bank account, do now im already out atm fee to get my funds out and deposit into my real bank account which I would have did I I knew I couldn’t get the advance. Can’t transfer funds to link account with emerald card only deposit funds. What a bunch of robbers, should be illegal this type of shit. Disgraceful!!!

I am unable to access my Emerald Card in order to access my ePocket to transfer money, so I can get gas to make it home from a road trip AND feed my CHILDREN!!!
